Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a high-quality fodder crop which has been hybridized successfully with its wild relative zigzag clover (T. medium L.). The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic impact of interspecific hybridization and subsequent repeated backcrossing on the variability within hybrid progeny genomes. Nuclear DNA content of 800 and 753 hybrid plants from F7/F8 and F8/F9 generations, respectively, was measured by flow cytometry. Resulting values were converted to estimated chromosome counts, which were successfully validated on a sample of 28 plants by...

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a disease of small grain cereals caused by Fusarium species. The pathogens affect spikes and kernels, resulting in reductions of yield and its quality. The present study was conducted to evaluate variation in the FHB resistance of wheat F2 hybrids derived from 16 crosses between winter wheat cultivars of various origin and with different susceptibility to FHB. Plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension consisting of a mixture of F. culmorum, F. graminearum and F. avenaceum isolates. After harvest 1000-kernel weight, number of kernels per spike and kernel weight per...

This paper studies QTL (quantitative trait locus) resistance to Sharp Eyespot in wheat using a genetic population of the recombinant inbred line (RIL) hybridized from Niavt 14 and Xuzhou 25. Based on three-year phenotypic data and a resultant RIL genetic map, three QTLs in total associated with Sharp Eyespot resistance were detected. Two out of the three loci were detected on chromosome 2B, namely Qses.jaas-2b1 and Qses.jaas-2b2, of which Qses.jaas-2b1 accounted for 5.46 and 8.56% of the phenotypic variation in the field after inoculation in two successive years and Qses.jaas-2b2 accounted for 6.04, 8.10 and 12.92%...

The genus Pyricularia (anamorph)/Magnaporthe (teleomorph) includes important destructive pathogens causing blast disease on various species from the family Poaceae. Thirty-five Magnaporthe isolates were collected from diseased rice plants (variety MR219) in different rice-growing regions of Malaysia, including the five states of Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Perak between 2010 and 2014. DNA sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), actin, β-tubulin and calmodulin gene regions, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analyses were conducted to...

For the purpose of marker assisted selection (MAS), six Algerian cultivars and landraces developed locally or introduced from external breeding programs for semi-arid environments were marker characterized at VRN-H1, VRN-H2 and FR-H2 loci. As controls the lines Nure and Tremois were used. Markers available in the literature, known to discriminate efficiently the trait-associated alleles between the two cultivars Nure and Tremois, were used. This study revealed that the used Algerian cultivars carry a dominant (spring) allele for VRN-H1, while the HvZCCT marker generated a polymorphic profile for the second...

Effective gametocides can serve as alternative agents to induce male sterility in sorghum. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of selected male gametocides in sorghum, to determine the optimum concentration of the chemicals and to investigate its possible effect on female sterility. Ethyl 4-fluorooxanilate (E4FO) and ethrel were evaluated on three genotypes of sorghum. The gametocides were sprayed at five concentrations at the booting stage when the panicles were released halfway from the flag leaf. Pollen and spikelet sterility were assessed using light and scanning electron microscopes. Both chemicals were effective in...
