The field pea is very important when it comes to the nutrition of domestic animals, due to a high content of proteins in its grains and aboveground biomass. The aim of this study was to examine genetic variability in quantitative traits of newly created field pea hybrids. The researchers studied two cultivars, one line and their F3 and F4 hybrids. The following quantitative traits were analysed: number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, 1000 seed weight and grain yield. The largest number of pods per plant was recorded for the Baccara × L-CC line hybrid, with a statistically significantly larger (P < 0.01)...

Twenty Chinese and two Czech wheat cultivars were assessed with respect to their genetic diversity using single sequence repeat (SSR) markers and high-molecular-weight (HMW)-glutenin alleles. Phenotypic characteristics including morphological, productivity and quality characters, earliness, and resistance to stresses were evaluated in field experiments and, consequently, drought tolerance (estimated by means of 13C discrimination method) and winter hardiness (in provocation test) were tested. Employment of both genetic and phenotypic characteristics allowed identifying promising sources of new genetic...

Fusarium head blight (FHB) mainly caused by Fusarium species is one of the most important diseases threatening worldwide wheat production. To develop new FHB resistance resources, disease resistances of three new wheat lines L958, L962 and L987 were evaluated over a period of several years. We employed L699 (PI672540) and L661 as the resistant and susceptible control, respectively. Moderate FHB resistance was observed in these three wheat lines, among which the genotype L958 was found a good resource for yield, quality and FHB resistance improvement. In addition, genotype L962 was found to be resistant to powdery mildew, and both L958 and...

This study was conducted to determine the effects of magnetic field (MF) strength on shoot regeneration and Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.). Seeds of flax cv. Madaras were exposed to different MF strengths (0 - control, 75, 150, and 300 millitesla (mT)) for 24 h by using an electromagnetic generator system fabricated in laboratory conditions. After sterilization, seeds were germinated on MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium in Magenta vessels. Hypocotyl explants excised from 7-days-old seedlings were used for regeneration. GV2260 strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens was used in...

Interspecific crosses play an important role in gene introgression, plant improvement and speciation. However, poor fertility of F1 generation was commonly found, which hampered backcrossing and ideal progeny generation. To explore useful materials for further breeding programs, sterile hybrids (DD1, FD1, ZD3) from different cross combinations of Lagerstroemia indica and L. speciosa and the fertile hybrid (ZD6) were selected. The results showed that pollen grains of sterile hybrids had no germination ability while ZD6 showed 25.90% pollen germination rate. The morphology of stigmas...

The following updates have been proposed for the XYZ system for the production of hybrid wheat: The waxy characteristics of the grain were used as a classifying mark. The candidate pollen sterility gene TIP2 was detected in silico based on similarity to known pollen sterility genes in rice. In order to maintain a sterile maternal component, the addition chromosome 7H was proposed, carrying wild-type alleles Waxy-H and TIP2-H. The concept of practical production of the commercial F1 seed was designed.

Armeniaca cathayana, a new species described in 2010, belongs to gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) system which is under S-allele control. One new non-S-ribonuclease (non-S-RNase) was found in A. cathayana through comparing its nucleotide and amino acid sequences with sequences of the S-allele in Genbank. The BLAST analysis showed that the one new non-S-RNase S68-RNase (GenBank Accession No. MH155952) had the highest 96% nucleotide sequence homology with Prunus webbii non-S-RNase PW1 (EU809938.1). Alignment of deduced amino acid sequences of A....
