In breeding plants for resistance to disease pathogens major genes are often used. They mostly confer a resistance, which can be overcome by a corresponding pathogen virulence specific to the resistance conferred by that gene. Therefore, monitoring of new virulences in the pathogen population is an integral part of both the study of resistance and practical breeding. The aim of this paper is to present the detection of rare virulences that have been found in aerial populations of Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei collected in the Czech Republic during the last six years. In total, 822 random isolates originating from cultivated spring...

The gliadins of the wild wheat Aegilops geniculata represent a valuable gene pool in breeding for bread making quality. The genetic diversity of gliadins in A. geniculata was studied among 36 of its accessions, collected in the north of Algeria, using acid polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis (Acid-PAGE). In total, sixty-one polymorphic bands and 35 gliadin patterns were identified. Twenty-eight different bands and 34 patterns were found in the ω-gliadin region, 13 polymorphic bands and 33 patterns for γ-gliadins, 12 bands and 34 different patterns for β-gliadins and eight bands in combination resulted in 25...

The sulphonylurea herbicide monosulphuron ester sodium (MES) was first used to induce male sterility in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Nearly 100% male sterility was achieved after a single treatment with 10 ml of 0.05-0.10 μg/ml MES solution per plant to the cultivars Zhongshuang No.9 and Zhongshuang No.11 at the uninucleate stage of the longest buds. No adverse effects on main agronomic traits and female fertility were observed. In the subsequent experiment, 48 out of 49 different accessions showed male sterility after spraying with 10 ml of 0.10 μg/ml MES solution per plant. Seven out of these 48 accessions were male sterile for the...

The flowering onset of 19 apple progeny was evaluated in 2005-2014 on a total number of 715 seedlings in comparison with their parents and grandparents. A very low flower set delays generally the onset of flowering by one day in comparison with a higher flower set. The maximum span between the first flowering onset and the last one within all the progeny of the study was 11 days. With one exception, the incidence of the first flowering dates of all the progeny fluctuated only within four days - April 28 and May 1. Among them, the great majority of the seedlings had the first flowering date span of not more than ± one day. The progeny of Pink...

The lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) belongs to the most important leguminous plants in Asia. It is a very popular and highly nutritious food. However, small pod size and low yield limit its agricultural use. Through irradiation mutagenesis of dry lentil seeds by 12C6+ ion beam, we found some lines with excellent agricultural traits in M2 progeny at doses of 90 Gy (grey), such as height increase and improvement of the number of branches and three-seed pods as well as seeds with increased grain yield. Six generations of irradiated lentils were screened for these traits. In the M8 generation, the grain yield of three high-yielding...

Although more than 400 microsatellite loci are currently available for Vicia faba L. (faba bean), an important food and feed grain crop legume, they have not yet been used for comprehensive molecular characterization of this crop. We report a three-step procedure for rapid and cost-effective delineation and utilization of informative genomic nuclear SSRs for paralleled genotyping in faba bean suitable also for other species: (i) pre-selection of loci generating PCR products of expected lengths which are potentially polymorphic (achieved by PCR amplification in bulked samples); (ii) exclusion of loci burdened with persistent...
