Molecular farming is an experimental application of biotechnology that involves the genetic modification of crops for the production of proteins and chemicals for medicinal and commercial purposes. The vast majority in the developing world cannot afford the high cost of therapeutics produced by existing methods. We need to produce not only new therapeutics but also cheaper versions of the existing ones. Molecular farming could offer a viable option for this growing need for biopharmaceuticals. Plant made therapeutics are cheaper, safer, can be abundantly produced and easily stored. Here, strategies and approaches utilized in plant molecular farming...

EST-SSR markers, derived from the A and B genomes of wheat were used to identify molecular markers associated with yellow rust resistance. For this purpose, bulk segregant analysis was performed using 114 EST-SSR primer pairs. They were screened on the parent genotypes and resistant/susceptible DNA pools from the cross between Izgi2001 (resistant male parent) × ES14 (susceptible female parent) at the seedling and adult plant stage. An EST-SSR marker, bu099658, generated the 206 bp DNA fragment that was present in the resistant parent and resistant bulk, but it was not present in the susceptible parent and the susceptible bulk. To investigate...

In this study, an optimized Cry2Aa gene was obtained after codon optimization based on the preferred codons in rice. The novel fusion gene Cry2Aa# was designed by adding the sequence coding the signal peptide of PR1a at the 5' end and the endoplasmic reticulum retention signal peptide KDEL at the 3' end of the optimized Cry2Aa gene, respectively. The Cry2Aa# and Bar genes were transformed into 4008S, a photoperiod-sensitive genic male sterile (PGMS) line in rice, using the Agrobacterium transfer method. A total of 65 regenerated plantlets confirmed by PCR were produced, in...

We report a feasibility study for expressing the LTB protein (Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin B subunit) via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). We produced five regenerated plants obtained on the selection medium supplemented with an antibiotic. Stable integrations of the LTB gene into the genome of these plants were confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. Western blot analysis showed that only two of the five T0 transgenic tomato plants expressed the pentameric LTB protein in the fruits. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay indicated that these two plants synthesized...

Interspecific hybridization can be used to broaden the genetic base, generate novel species, postulate genetic relationships, and to introgress elite alien genes. However, interspecific hybridizations using wild parents outside the Ipomoea section Batatas are very difficult and have not been much studied. We used an improved hybridization technology to generate three novel interspecific hybrids by crossing Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. × I. hederacea Jacq., I. batatas (L.) Lam. × I. muricata (L.) Jacq., and I. batatas (L.) Lam. × I. lonchophylla J.M. Black. The ploidy level of the...
