In 2009-2011 virulence of the wheat leaf rust population was studied on Thatcher near-isogenic lines with Lr1, Lr2a, Lr2b, Lr2c, Lr3a, Lr9, Lr11, Lr13, Lr15, Lr17, Lr19, Lr21, Lr23, Lr24, Lr26 and Lr28. Samples of leaf rust were obtained from different parts of the Slovak Republic. A total of 122 wheat leaf rust isolates were analysed. Resistance gene Lr19 was effective to all tested isolates. Virulence to Lr9 was found, however only in one isolate. Gene Lr24 conditioned resistance...

A cDNA library was created on the basis of transcripts that were generated during the process of infection of wheat and barley with Pyrenophora tritici-repentis or P. teres. Due to the time course of infection assays, the leaves were collected at various intervals after inoculation until 100 h after inoculation. We compared the temporal development of the two pathogens, as well as the effect of varieties of the same crop species, and differences among isolates of a single pathogen. The appressoria and vesicular structures developed more rapidly in barley varieties inoculated by P. teres than in wheat varieties inoculated...

We report here the suitable explant with high efficiency of transformation and the positive effects of timentin over other antibiotics like carbenicillin and cefotaxime on the elimination of Agrobacterium tumefaciens during the genetic transformation of popular indica rice (Oryza sativa L.). The tissues assayed were embryogenic calli, embryos with endosperm contamination, intact seeds, leaf blades, leaf bases and coleoptiles. The frequency of transient β-glucuronidase (GUS) expression as revealed by histochemical assay was 90% for embryogenic calli, which was the highest among the explants used. On the basis of disc-diffusion...

To estimate the genetic diversity of chickpea germplasm from Iran, a total of 307 landraces from 4 regions including: northern areas (29 from Ardebil, 3 from Qazvin and 5 from Mazanderan provinces), temperate (16 from Kermanshah, 2 from Semnan, 54 from Khorasan and 20 from Kerman provinces), semi-arid (28 from Ghom and 56 from Isfahan provinces) and cold areas (15 from West Azarbayjan, 52 from Tehran and 27 from East Azarbayjan provinces) were analysed using 16 microsatellite loci. The number of alleles per microsatellite locus ranged from 8 to 29, with an average of 19.31 per locus. A high level of genetic diversity in the northern area (He...

Until now in Europe has not been cultivated any hybrid cultivar of oilseed rape based on the Shaan 2A cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), a widely used CMS system in China. The aim of Czech breeders now is to produce new, improved cultivars of rapeseed based on this CMS system. Sterile Shaan 2A CMS line (S; rf/rf), its corresponding maintainers (N; rf/rf) and fertility restorers (S; Rf/Rf) were analyzed on molecular level for the presence of functional CMS cytoplasm. Two new primer pairs covering CMS-associated gene (so called orf224-1) present in Shaan 2A CMS line were developed and selection...
