The study and conservation of plant genetic resources (PGR) in the Czech Republic has a long tradition. Since 1993, the efforts on PGR have been concentrated within the National Programme on Plant Genetic Resources. Twelve institutions hold a total of 50 000 accessions; 18.4% of which are vegetatively reproduced species. The Crop Research Institute (CRI), Prague, has overall responsibility for coordinating the Programme, holds more than a half of all accessions in the Czech collections, runs the national information system on PGR, and provides long-term storage for all seed-propagated species (inclusive the routine cryo-bank for selected vegetatively...

The genetic diversity of 140 accessions of Triticum turgidum ssp. carthlicum Nevski em. A. Löve & D. Löve and 159 accessions of T. turgidum ssp. polonicum L. em. Thell. was evaluated by the analysis of HMW glutenin subunits. Seven allelic variants were found among the carthlicum accessions: three at the Glu-A1 locus (two of them were novel alleles) and four at the Glu-B1 locus (one of them novel). More variability was found among the polonicum accessions with 16 allelic variants: six at the Glu-A1 locus (three of them novel), and ten at the Glu-B1 locus (five...

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat worldwide. We aimed to map QTL for FHB resistance in RL4137, a FHB resistant line derived from Frontana using 90 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) from a cross between RL4137 and the moderately FHB resistant variety Timgalen. A total of seven putative FHB resistance QTL (1B, 2B, 3A, 6A, 6B, 7A and 7D) were identified and in all but one instance, the alleles from RL4137 had a positive effect on FHB resistance. The QTL, Qfhs.jic-2band Qfhs.jic-6b contributed by the alleles from RL4137 and Timgalen, respectively were detected in multiple trials. Our study also identified three...

Virulence frequency to powdery mildew resistances in winter barley cultivarsOriginal Paper

Virulence frequencies to powdery mildew resistances in winter barley cultivars mostly registered in the Czech Republic were studied in 2007 and 2008. Random samples of the air populations originating from winter and spring barley fields were obtained by means of a mobile version of a jet spore sampler. Conidia were sampled by driving across the Czech Republic. In total 349 isolates were studied and 17 differentials were used. The virulence frequencies to specific resistances of given cultivars showed wide range from 0% to 100%. Nine differentials were used to distinguish 134 pathotypes, of which 32 representing 63.9% of isolates were detected in both...
